Gulf of Carpentaria

Gulf Energy

360 Environmental provided environmental consultancy services to Gulf Energy to undertake an Environment Plan (EP) under the requirements of NOPSEMA and a referral under Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 for a Seismic project in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

In accordance with NOPSEMA, the EP written by 360 Environmental contained the following aspects:

  • Description of the proposed activity, existing natural, social and economic environment, regulatory and other requirements, and acceptable levels for impacts and risks;
  • Details of environmental impacts and risks for the activity;
  • Evaluation and demonstration that impacts and risks are reduced to an acceptable level and As Low as Reasonably Practicable (ALARP); and
  • Definition of environmental performance objectives, environmental performance standards and measurement criteria that capture performance and monitoring requirements.

The EP was successfully approved amid a challenging time of changing regulation and the process involved multifaceted engagement with a range of stakeholders from government agencies to fisheries, defence and shipping interests.  Following the successful approval of the EP, Gulf Energy then commissioned 360 to provide necessary environmental compliance audit, induction and reporting assistance associated with the Environment Plan under the requirements of NOPSEMA and the referral under EPBC Act for the seismic project.

For this ongoing project, 360 Environmental will travel to Darwin prior to the vessel departure and conduct the necessary pre-survey compliance audit as well as the pre-mobilisation inductions for crew in order to ensure that the vessel crew are aware of the environmental sensitivities in the area and the potential environmental risks associated with the job.

Gulf Energy also commissioned 360 Environmental to provide a Marine Mammal Observer, who will maintain watch during daylight hours for any marine mammals in the vicinity and collect the necessary checklists to ensure compliance during the seismic survey. Once the seismic survey has been completed, 360 Environmental will carry out necessary reporting requirements such as a Marine Mammal Report and Compliance Report to NOPSEMA to demonstrate environmental compliance.

360 Environmental has the technical depth and strategic expertise to develop EPs across a wide range of activities, and has an excellent relationship with NOPSEMA, ensuring the approvals process goes as smoothly as possible.
